Shifting is slow to respond: If you try shifting your car into drive, reverse or the park position and you notice a delay in the engagement of the gears then there is probably a problem lurking which would become a more serious problem if not addressed right away.
Unusual noises: If you here a whining sound or a loud clunk when the gears are engaged that is a sign that your transmission is in need of preemptive repair to avoid complete failure. The sounds are different depending on the make of your car or truck but these are the most common noises you will hear.
Leaking Fluid or persistent need to keep adding fluid: Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is essential to life of your transmission as it lubricates and conditions the seals and serves as a hydraulic fluid. If the fluids get too low the engine can seize up and then you will have a far more serious and costly repairs to make.
Burnt smell: When the transmission fluid heats up beyond its recommended temperature that indicates there is a bigger issue inside the casing. So pay attention to this important sign.
Check Engine Light: Yes, the dreaded "Check Engine" light. We have all seen it come on at one point in our driving careers. This is the easiest way to know there is a problem that needs repairing. Transmissions in today's cars and trucks have sensors that are very sensitive to vibrations or rough functioning gears. You may not know about it but the sensors do. And they will let you know there is an issue that needs to be addressed before it is too late
